The Casa Magna Colorado Robusto has set off a frenzy in the cigar industry. The No. 1 Cigar of the year is something that comes around, well, only once a year. It's a highly coveted prize by all cigar blenders and manufacturers. It is rumoured that the Casa Magna Colorado Robusto got the number 1 ranking in 2008 because its incredible price and flavor. Typically the No. 1 cigar of the year is an expensive puro produced in either Cuba or made by Padron. The Company producing these cigars is relatively new in the industry and call themselves Fonseca. This is, by far, the highest rated cigar made by this manufacturer and certainly surprised a lot of smokers. Manuel Quesada is the blender for this line and he teamed with Nestor Plasencia (a very famous tobacconist). This cigar was rated an astonishing 93 in the August Edition of Cigar Aficionado.
The major contributing force to this cigar's high rating is the fact that it retails at $5.25 per cigar. This is quite contradictory to the previous winners of the famed award as they usually retail closer to $30 per cigar. The reviews of this cigar simply state that it's best described as a full-flavored cigar that has hints of coffee, sweetness, and creamy raisins. Each cigar is wrapped in a "Colorado" wrapper and the construction and appearance of the cigar has been described as reddish.
If you're interested in this cigar and alternatives that are like it - good luck finding some! It's not a very common wrapper to use by blenders - though they might start using now! You're looking for a nicaraguan filler, binder, and wrapper in the colorado blend. The cigar is a Robusto size and retails for about $5.25. I'd suggeset you go with Don Kiki Red Label Colorado wrapper cigar.
In 2009 Casa Magna came out with their new blend called the Casa Magna Oscuro. It comes in 4 sizes: Robusto, Grand Churchill, Toro, and Belicoso. The big difference in the Oscuro cigar vs. the regular Casa Magna line is that the wrapper is different. The blend remains relatively the same, but now the Oscuro line has a nice, dark Oscuro wrapper instead of the classic Colorado wrapper of the regular line of Casa Magna Cigars.
